The Black Sabbath final performance took place Saturday in their hometown of Birmingham, England, reuniting original members Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, and Bill Ward for one final appearance together. The massive sendoff concert — titled Back to the Beginning — ran for approximately 10 hours and marked the end of Ozzy Osbourne’s live career.
Unable to perform a full concert in nearly seven years due to ongoing health challenges, Osbourne opened the evening with a seated five-song solo set. Fans were treated to renditions of “I Don’t Know,” “Mr. Crowley,” “Suicide Solution,” “Mama, I’m Coming Home,” and “Crazy Train.”
The night reached its emotional high point as Iommi, Butler, and Ward joined Osbourne on stage for a closing four-song Black Sabbath set. Together, the legendary lineup performed “War Pigs,” “N.I.B.,” “Iron Man,” and “Paranoid.”
Before the final Sabbath set, a full day of performances by major names in hard rock and metal helped mark the occasion. Artists such as Metallica, Guns N’ Roses, Slayer, Tool, Pantera, Gojira, Alice in Chains, Lamb of God, Halestorm, Anthrax, Rival Sons, and Mastodon performed a mix of their own songs and covers.
The lineup was curated by musical director Tom Morello. It featured multiple all-star collaborations, including appearances by Steven Tyler (Aerosmith), Travis Barker (blink-182), Chad Smith (Red Hot Chili Peppers), Billy Corgan (The Smashing Pumpkins), Tool’s Adam Jones and Danny Carey, Ronnie Wood (The Rolling Stones), David Draiman (Disturbed), Sammy Hagar, Lzzy Hale (Halestorm), Papa V Perpetua (Ghost), and Yungblud.
Actor Jason Momoa served as host for the day’s events. A series of video messages from other rock legends rounded out the celebration, including contributions from Brian Johnson and Angus Young (AC/DC), Judas Priest, Def Leppard, Elton John, Marilyn Manson, Jack Black, Fred Durst (Limp Bizkit), and Jonathan Davis (Korn).
