After five years of waiting, Quicksand Bring On The Psychics is finally real — the NYC post-hardcore architects just dropped the announcement alongside two singles, and they hit hard.
Bring On The Psychics is set for a July 17 release via Equal Vision Records, marking the band’s debut on the storied independent label. The album was produced and mixed by Jon Markson — known for his work with Drug Church and DRAIN — across a rapid 10-day session, and it shows: the two lead singles hit like they were made under pressure and built to last.
Formed in New York City in 1990 out of the ashes of Gorilla Biscuits, Youth of Today, Burn, and Bold, Quicksand took the aggression of hardcore and added a groove-driven crunch to it, helping pioneer what we now call post-hardcore. After two landmark 90s records and a decade-plus hiatus, the band reunited in 2012 and has continued releasing music as the three-piece of guitarist/vocalist Walter Schreifels, bassist/vocalist Sergio Vega, and drummer Alan Cage.
Bring On The Psychics was inspired in part by a quote from scientist Carl Sagan and the album finds Schreifels drawing on both old and new. He’s described going back to his earlier hardcore influences — the “break down the walls” ethos — and wanting to channel that energy, complete with mosh parts.
The two lead singles give you a real sense of where the record lives. The opener “Get To It” brings hook-driven heaviness, while “Crystallize” goes toward shoegaze territory — and “Days You Run To” is a breezy ballad that Schreifels describes as tapping into “the Pink Floyd side of Quicksand.” The full tracklist spans 10 songs and promises a lot of sonic ground covered.
Alternative Press has partnered with the band for an exclusive vinyl pressing of Bring On The Psychics, limited to 500 copies.
