Plastic Free July Longmont initiative is being led by the City of Longmont’s Sustainability Office, which is encouraging residents to rethink their plastic use through education and community engagement.

As part of their efforts, the office hosted the “Plastic Free July: Rethink Reuse” event at the Longmont Museum on July 9th from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. The evening featured a panel discussion and a community resource fair centered on practical solutions for reducing single-use plastics.

The panel included representatives from Boulder County, Sustainable Resilient Longmont, Eco-Cycle, Green Girl Recycling, and Vulture Collective. Panelists shared insights on local and global strategies to reduce plastic waste, emphasizing the importance of systemic change in how plastic is produced and consumed.

Attendees were encouraged to participate in the Plastic Free July Challenge, committing to reduce their single-use plastic consumption throughout the month. To support this effort, the Sustainability Office distributed free “Choose to Refuse” kits designed to help individuals adopt more sustainable habits.

In addition to the panel, the event featured resource tabling from community organizations, offering guidance, tools, and local solutions for reducing plastic use.

Overall, the event aimed not only to support individual behavior change but to foster a broader understanding of plastic pollution and promote collaborative action within the Longmont community.
