Denver Union Station is the city’s central railway station and a major transportation hub in downtown Denver, Colorado. Located at 17th and Wynkoop Streets in the LoDo district, the station serves as an intermodal hub connecting Amtrak, RTD light rail and commuter rail lines, regional buses, shuttles, taxis, and bike access. The facility includes an eight-track commuter rail station and a 22-bay underground bus concourse.
The original Union Station opened on June 1, 1881, but was destroyed by fire in 1894. The current Beaux-Arts-inspired building was constructed in two phases, with its central portion completed in 1914.
In 2012, a major renovation began to transform the station into a modern transit hub while preserving its historic character. The updated station reopened in the summer of 2014 as a centerpiece of Denver’s transit-oriented development.
Today, the building is home to the Crawford Hotel with 112 rooms, along with a variety of restaurants, bars, and shops. Its Great Hall has been reimagined as “Denver’s Living Room,” a welcoming public gathering space.
Union Station combines historic architecture with contemporary amenities. Visitors can enjoy chef-owned restaurants, boutique shopping, and stylish bars. The Crawford Hotel adds a boutique stay option in the heart of LoDo.
Sustainability was a key focus in the renovation. The Bus Concourse was awarded LEED Gold certification in 2014 for its environmentally friendly design, which incorporates increased ventilation, natural light, and green cleaning policies.
Public plazas and landscaped areas surround the station, tying transportation with recreation.
Union Station is served by Amtrak’s California Zephyr, which runs between Chicago and the San Francisco Bay Area. RTD’s A Line commuter rail connects the station to Denver International Airport every 15 minutes, with a travel time of about 37 minutes.
In addition, multiple commuter rail and bus routes operate from Union Station, making it a vital regional gateway.
Open 24/7, Denver Union Station has become more than just a transportation hub. It’s also a social destination where locals and visitors gather to eat, drink, shop, or relax. Its blend of historic charm and modern design has cemented its role as one of the most recognizable landmarks in the city.
