The Origins of Packaging: A Seattle and Denver Collaboration

Daniel Lyon and Connor Birch of Packaging, creators of the 2025 self-titled debut album

The Packaging album marks a bold and imaginative debut from two artists separated by geography but united by creative chemistry. Released on October 10, 2025, Packaging is the joint effort of Daniel Lyon of Seattle’s Spirit Award and Daniel “Connor” Birch of Denver’s Flaural.

While the project’s name might evoke a critique of the music industry, the album itself transcends cynicism. It’s a deeply felt and sonically layered experience that fuses krautrock’s rhythmic pulse with psychedelic shimmer and modern electronic textures—all delivered with a distinctly human warmth.

Crafting the Sound of the Packaging Album

Lyon and Birch built Packaging as a collaborative statement—one that captures both movement and emotion. Its mix of krautrock chug, psychedelic swirl, and electronic atmosphere gives each track a sense of expansive momentum. The duo calls the album “a tactile experience,” encouraging listeners to explore it in physical form to fully appreciate its immersive design and sound.

To create that sonic depth, the pair enlisted several notable contributors from across the indie landscape, including:

  • Luke Temple (Here We Go Magic)
  • Ash Reiter (Sugar Candy Mountain)
  • James Barone (Beach House)
  • Andy Rauworth (Gauntlet Hair)

Together, they constructed an album that feels both nostalgic and forward-thinking—an introspective journey wrapped in hypnotic grooves and lush textures.

Themes and Atmosphere

At its emotional core, Packaging explores feelings of disconnection, restlessness, and the search for meaning in a hyper-connected world. The lyrics and tone often balance melancholy with subtle optimism, while the layered production reinforces its cinematic mood.

The duo described the project as a reflection on modern alienation: how people present curated versions of themselves while longing for something authentic underneath. That tension runs throughout the record, giving it both resonance and depth.
