Motion City Soundtrack New Album Arrives This Fall Featuring Patrick Stump, Mat Kerekes & More
Motion City Soundtrack’s new album The Same Old Wasted Wonderful World is set for release on September 19 via Epitaph, marking the band’s first full-length release in 10 years.
Produced by Sean O’Keefe, who previously worked with the band in the early 2000s, the record features several guest collaborators. Fall Out Boy’s Patrick Stump, who appeared on Motion City Soundtrack’s hit “Everything Is Alright,” returns for the track “Particle Physics.” Additional guests include Citizen’s Mat Kerekes on “Your Days Are Numbered” and Sincere Engineer’s Deanna Belos on “Things Like This.”
Reflecting on the band’s evolution, frontman Justin Pierre says, “I think that if you look at a lot of our past records, it’s about ‘What’s wrong? What am I not getting right? Why do I feel fucking crazy? Why can’t I figure this out? And I have figured it out. It’s almost like I felt I didn’t have an identity [in the past] and now by working through the hard stuff, I know who I am.”
The lead single, “She Is Afraid,” is described by Pierre as a power pop anthem influenced by Del the Funky Homosapien, That Dog, and Faith No More. “As soon as I heard Josh’s bonkers guitar part, I flipped out. I’d been listening to a lot of Del… and I think his influence comes out a bit in the verses,” Pierre explains. “Matt mentioned he hears some Faith No More in the tune… now I hear it too.”
The single arrives with a music video directed by Jesse Cain.
To celebrate the announcement, Motion City Soundtrack will perform a sold-out show at Mercury Lounge in New York City on June 17, followed by a second show at The Stone Pony in Asbury Park, NJ, on June 18. Additional dates include Summerfest in Milwaukee on June 27 and Minnesota Yacht Club Festival in Saint Paul on July 19.
