The name “Covenhoven” comes from a cabin built and named by Van Horne’s grandfather in Wyoming’s Medicine Bow National Forest. This location has been a major emotional and thematic anchor for his work, with the cabin and surrounding landscape directly inspiring the first self-titled album and continuing to shape the project’s sense of place.

Joel Van Horne’s Musical Background

A Colorado native with a background in jazz guitar, Van Horne has been writing and performing around Denver since his teens. Before starting Covenhoven, he spent time in the Front Range indie rock band Carbon Choir. What began as a solo studio project—with Van Horne writing, recording, and producing much of the material himself—has since expanded into a full band for live performances featuring strings, drums, and additional guitars and vocals.

In addition to these studio albums, Van Horne created Field Notes. In this companion project, songs were re-recorded in outdoor locations during an 8,000-mile road trip across the western U.S. and Canada. This project emphasized the deep connection between music and natural environments.
